I'm a little confused about vygotsky, if he was a constructivist then why would he believe in leading on a child step by step through a learning stage ... Isn't constructivism about letting the learner explore... Or am I confusing social constructivism with it...
Then why is he linked to guided learning... When social constructivism is spoken of... isn't it supposed to be inquiry based and exploratory learning... ? Please correct me if I'm wrong...
vygotsky's scaffolding.....ZPD.....which got three points...1.development always proceed learning...2.learning and development cannot be separated but can occur at the same time... . 3.learning and development are separate but interactive process....lol Vygotsky is confusing.....i like Bruner and Piaget :)
In a classroom setting what is a scaffold? who acting like scaffold? certain terms have different meanings in literal sense but when defined in educational context they have meaning.
Literally scaffold means to put things layer by layer... And my opinion about scaffolding in teaching is instructional design of a lesson or a goal that is presented to a the learners with greater challenges with each step.
i think a teacher plans different segments of a lesson plan like she starts with eliciting/brainstorming and she gets out students prior knowledge so one fold has been opened, then she plans an activity to make the concept more clear so child's concept is a bit more cleared and second fold opens then he is given a reading material to study so third fold opens and then he discusses it with his group and through social constructivism another folds opens so i feel a child is acting as a scaffold and teacher it tahing the lesson to the main point by planning segments in progression to unfold all the grey areas.I'm sorry in advance if im wrong ;)
Zakia yes you are absolutely right. The confusion arised when we identified vygotsky in a case study of a teacher centered learning environment,(task3 day2). Even though all his findings refer to student centered learning where the teacher and the learner are collaborating and are in a two way process
A Review of General Psychology study, published in 2002, ranked Vygotsky as the 83rd top psychologist of the 20th century....so need to study more about him....or we can discuss in class
Nudrat Vygotsky’s theory is believed to be one of the foundations of constructivism . It asserts three major themes regarding social interaction, as Zakia mentioned. Vygotsky’s theory promotes learning contexts in which students play an active role in learning. The teacher should collaborate with her students in order to help facilitate meaning construction in students. Learning therefore becomes a reciprocal experience for the students and teacher. ( Circle time, jigsaw activity day2 CICTL)
If we read vygotsky cultural development comes twice inter and intra psychology which means by interaction with the social environment and it will lead to criusoty which intern lead to exploring when we talk about individual level that is where ZPD plays role as learning is never possible in an isolated environment
Iffat and Saira you both are absolutely correct and totally makes sense... And also support Vygotsky's learning theories...but my question was catered to during circle time yesterday on day 3... The conclusion drawn out of the discussion was that no one lesson plan can be judged by one learning strategy or linked to one school of thought. We always mix and match our mode of deliverance, and our roles as facilitators, in a classroom. You just can't label it like Piaget or Bruner or Vygotsky... But one could just say that I believe the predominant style/strategy/school of thought of this lesson is, Vygotsky's with a behaviorists approach.
Can cognitive acceleration project help students to work independently as well. As, during project work there are some students how interact very less... Will it not effect there learning and slow down the cognitive learning process as they are not socially vocal in there groups
