Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are both very important for effective learning as intrinsic movtivation makes the learner involved in the learning process by enjoying the task and accepting the challenge which leads to increase in curiosity and finally the feeling of achievement. To me extrinsic motivation can't creat that urge for learning without intrinsic motivation.
